IBJJF Worlds: Trials

June 3, 2019

"I’m not trying to knock on anyone who has competed at the IBJJF Worlds, but doesn’t it seem like there should be a trial to qualify?"

Winning an IBJJF World Championship is comparable to a gold medal at the Olympics, anord I dare to say, on par with a green jacket at the Masters in golf.

Some of the most famous names in the sport today don’t have an IBJJF World title. Once you have that accolade attached to your name, your position in the sport is pretty much set: sponsors, seminars, students flocking to your academy. That is the dream for most grappling athletes.

Currently, in order to compete for an IBJJF world title, all you have to do is register, pay the fee, make weight and show up on the right day.

I’ve met people throughout my BJJ journey who’ve competed at the Worlds. Some have done very well and some had just the one match, but they still showcased their skills at the Worlds.

I’m not trying to knock on anyone who has competed at the IBJJF Worlds, but doesn’t it seem like there should be a trial to qualify?

The Abu Dhabi Combat Club does a great job getting the cream of the crop to compete at their contest by administering a selection process- the ADCC Trials.

If the IBJJF followed the same structure, I think the IBJJF World Championship would have only the best of the best competing. This would make for  smoother competition with less waiting time for the athletes.

One could make the argument that the IBJJF makes a lot of money this way. Another argument would be an athlete should have to qualify even for a chance to compete at the trials.

The IBJJF, ADCC and all other grappling organizations are still young compared to the Olympics or the World Games.

Will the IBJJF eventually establish a trial in order for only the best of the best to compete? Only time will tell.
