“She tries to stand up to pull her arm out, but Blackwell instinctually drops her hips down towards the mat.”
The crowd cheers and thumps the mat as these two make their way to the center. They shake hands, and the match is underway.
The energy goes from zero to 100 in an instant as Malinowski charges forward. Blackwell pulls guard. Malinowski drives her knee between Blackwell’s leg to control the center for a pass. Blackwell finds her grips to control Malinowski’s arms and frames with her legs. She switches to a two-on-one grip on Malinowski’s right arm. Then she bridges off Malinowski’s right hip with her left leg while pushing Malinowski’s left arm away to transition into a triangle-shell.
It looks as if Blackwell has an easy triangle, but her left leg is over her right shin. This small detail helps Malinowski find the exit and escape. Malinowski tries to pass, but Blackwell instantly scoots to her right and frames. From there she is able to re-guard with an inside collar grip on Malinowski’s right collar while controlling her sleeve at the elbow.
Malinowski circles to her right to pass but doesn’t break the grips first and falls into another triangle-shell.
This time, Blackwell instantly transitions to an armbar attempt.
Malinowski stays calm and stacks Blackwell. She’s able to free her head from Blackwell’s left leg, but for a fraction of a second, enough space is created for Blackwell to swing her leg back around.
Malinowski knows she’s in trouble. She tries to stand up to pull her arm out, but Blackwell instinctually drops her hips down towards the mat. She has no choice but to tap.
Some great transitions by Coco Blackwell. We look forward to watching her compete again.
Blackwell submits Malinowski by armbar with 4:17 left in the match.
