"With Montes defending the collar choke, Banta takes the opportunity to transition into a body triangle. It seems as though Montes is falling deeper and deeper into the quicksand."
Both athletes bump fists and Banta instantly jumps to pull guard. But just before Banta’s feet leave the mat, Montes is able to knee tap Banta and secure an early two-point lead.
Montes brings his elbows tight to his body and wants to stand up. Banta decides to open his guard, shifts his hip out to his left to Lasso Montes’ right arm. Banta goes deep with his left leg in the Lasso and crosses over Montes’ left arm to knock him off his balance.
Montes does a good job keeping his base by planting his free hand on the mat. Banta takes the opportunity to pass Montes’ arm that’s being Lassoed to his other hand.
Montes wisely catches on to Banta’s attempt and fights off the exchange. Banta switches to a new plan without skipping a beat-- he controls Montes’ left heel and kicks his right leg under Montes to scoot his hip in and set up X-Guard while still controlling the Lasso on Montes’s right arm with his left hand.
Banta looks to sweep Montes, but Montes has no choice but to post out with his free hand. This gives Banta the opportunity to switch the Lasso grip to his right hand.
There’s a slight moment when both athletes are contemplating on what their next step should be.
-Montes: break Banta’s hooks and grips, and I’m out.
-Banta: scoot my hips a bit more and find my door for the sweep.
Just then, Banta scoots his hips out to his right, takes his right leg that was controlling Montes’ left hip from X-Guard and brings it around to controlling Montes’ right hip, now with an outside control. He uses the left leg to stretch out Montes by pressing hard into his knee while controlling Montes’ pant leg with his left hand to really throw him off balance.
Montes tries his best to look for an opening, but Banta already sees his. He underhooks and switches back to XG. With one smooth rock of his hips, he transitions to his feet and now both athletes are standing.
Banta has Montes’ left leg up on his shoulders, as if he’s carrying a Christmas tree. Montes hops on his free leg to buy himself some time to figure out an escape.
Banta gets the rhythm down for Montes’ hopping and perfectly times a foot sweep to score two points and even the score.
Montes rolls to counter the stack pass, but Banta flows Montes’ energy and finds his back.
It doesn’t take long for Banta to secure his hooks and score four more points. Banta is now up by four.
Banta threatens a collar choke, but Montes defends.

Montes continues to fight off Banta’s attempts and comes close to escaping, but Banta is able to stay calm, belly down Montes and line up his elbow in the center of Montes’ chest to submit him by Rear Naked Choke with 2:28 seconds left in the round.
